Sandy Koufax became the first player to appear on the cover of Who’s Who in Baseball three times (1964, 1966, and 1967). He retired at 30 after the 1966 season.

Koufax led the majors with 27 wins—a career high—an ERA of 1.73, and 317 strikeouts, to win the National League Triple Crown of Pitching for the second consecutive season, and the third time in four years. He won his third NL Cy Young Award and was an All-Star.

Roberto Clemente, a native of Puerto Rico, spent his entire 18-year major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1966 Clemente batted .317, hit 29 home runs, and was second in the league with 71 extra base hits. He led the league with 17 assists from right field, won the Gold Glove (one of 12 consecutive), and was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player.

Clemente won the NL batting title four times and was named to 14 All-Star teams. Clemente was the Most Valuable Player in the 1971 World Series. He was killed in the crash of his overloaded plane bringing relief supplies to earthquake-ravaged Managua, Nicaragua, on New Year’s Eve 1972. He had exactly 3,000 hits. His uniform #21 was retired by the Pirates, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame the next year by acclamation.
